Pass the Michigan Cosmetology Licensing Exam

The next step in becoming a cosmetologist is to pass the Michigan cosmetology licensing exams. The exam consists of two portions: the practical and the theory exam. 

Practical Exam

The practical exam is approximately 225 minutes (3.75 hours) in length. Test takers can expect to be tested on the following:

• Workstation preparation (10 minutes)
• Haircutting (25 minutes)
• Chemical wave (varied timing)
• Foil highlights (25 minutes)
• Hydroxide virgin relaxer (25 minutes)
• Hair color retouch (25 minutes)
• Blow dry and thermal curl (25 minutes)
• Basic facial (25 minutes)
• Manicure (35 minutes)
• End of day clean up (10 minutes)

Theory Exam

This test consists of 110 score questions and 10 non-scored experimental questions. Test takers will have 120 minutes (2 hours) to complete the test. You can expect to be tested on:

• Safety and infection control (25%)
• Client consultation (2%)
• Hair, scalp, skin, and nail analysis (15%)
• Hairstyling (6%)
• Haircutting (12%)
• Chemical services (15%)
• Skincare (6%)
• Makeup (2%)
• Hair removal (4%)
• Nails (13%)
